Introduction

We're once again excited to present a new event site for our club. Along with our friends at the Lowell Observatory, just west of downtown Flagstaff, we're offering another opportunity for you to learn more about orienteering and practice your navigation skills. The Lowell Observatory is home to a number of buildings and telescopes that are part of a National Historic Landmark. It was here at the Lowell Observatory that Pluto was discovered in 1930. The site continues today as an education facility that welcomes over 80,000 visitors per year. In addition to its scientific value, the site is also home to an open pine forest located within walking distance from downtown Flagstaff.

We're currently working hard to create a new map for the Lowell Observatory. This project is helping us expand the areas we can use for our navigation practice. We hope you'll take an opportunity to get out of the Phoenix September heat and join us in Flagstaff. We promise you'll enjoy the cool mountain air and the new area to explore.

On Saturday, September 10, we'll offer several orienteering events: a beginner's clinic and two shorter "sprint" events.

Beginner's Clinic We'll use this clinic to teach basic navigation concepts that will help you navigate through any of our orienteering events. These same concepts are equally useful for any land navigation using a compass and topographic maps. Additional details concerning our beginner's clinic are found here.
Sprint Events A "sprint" event is a shorter orienteering event that typically includes less-difficult control locations. The sprint event is designed for quick navigation choices as opposed to more complex navigation found in longer events. Sprint events are excellent for both beginners and seasoned orienteers alike. More information concerning sprint events is found here.

Parental Consent

Parental Consent Now Required (Click here for more information)
All participants under age 18 are now required to have a signed parental consent form on file with the club. You can complete the form before the event and either scan it and send it to us by e-mail or bring it with you to the event.

Pre-registration

Pre-registration recommended (Click here to pre-register)
While on-site, day-of-event registration is available, we will print a limited number of extra maps. We cannot guarantee that we'll have maps for everyone who registers on the day of the event. We strongly suggest that you pre-register to ensure you get a map.

When pre-registering, each individual participant must complete a separate pre-registration form. On the day of the event, you are welcome to get together as a group and participate in a team of any size. You will sign waivers and organize into teams at the event site on the day of the event.
