Buckeye Hills Robbins Butte

Introduction

On Saturday and Sunday, January 12 and 13, we start 2019 with a fun weekend of orienteering at our Lower Sonoran Desert events sites at Buckeye Hills and Robbins Butte. While we've used Robbins Butte many times before, we have only used the Buckeye Hills site once for a Bike-O and never for a regular orienteering event. We hope you'll join us for some fun navigation practice southwest of the Phoenix metro area.

We start the weekend with a FREE beginner's clinic at our Buckeye Hills/County Circle event site. Registration starts at 8:30 AM. The clinic starts promptly at 9:00. We'll provide enough training and practice to give true beginners a good idea how to navigate with a map and a compass.

At the same time as our beginner's clinic, we'll open our 2-hour Score-O course. During the Score-O, participants have up to 2 hours to find as many destination markers as they can. We'll have enough destination markers on the course so beginners and experienced orienteers will both find some fun navigation practice. Registration starts at 8:30 AM. Participants can start the course any time between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. The course closes at 1:00 PM. The Lower Sonoran Desert contains less vegetation than other areas around Phoenix. The terrain is rocky in spots but is definitely runnable with few sharp cactus waiting to bite your legs.

Saturday night, we will present a 2-hour Night-O at our Buckeye Hills/West Park event site. The Night-O is just like a Score-O with one major difference; the event is held at night. Particants need to bring their own light source (headlamp, flashlight, etc.) in order to navigate through the desert in the dark. We intentionally place the destination markers in easier locations than our Score-O. Registration starts at 5:30 PM. There is a mandatory pre-race briefing at 6:00 PM. We'll hand out the maps during the briefing. We have a mass start (for everyone) at 6:15 PM. We hope you'll give our Night-O a try.

Finally, on Sunday, we'll offer another 2-Hour Score-O at our Robbins Butte event site. Registration begins at 8:30 AM. The Score-O course opens at 9:00 AM. Participants may start the course at any time between 9:00 and 11:00 AM and have up to 2 hours to find as many destination markers as they can. The course closes at 1:00 PM.

Pre-Registration

In order to promote pre-registration for our events, the Club has implemented a new pricing structure. Participants who pre-register for the event will benefit from our priority pricing. While on-site registration is still available, pricing for on-site registration is more expensive. In addition, we'll print some extra maps for each of our events, but we cannot guarantee a map for those who do not pre-register.

Pre-Registration is open until Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 11:59 PM. After the pre-registration closes, you can still try your luck and register on-site. We will have pre-printed maps for everyone who pre-registers. We cannot guarantee a map for those who register on-site.

Parental Consent:

Parental Consent Now Required (Click here for more information)

All participants under age 18 are now required to have a signed parental consent form on file with the club. You can complete the form before the event and either scan it and send it to us by e-mail or bring it with you to the event.

Standard club fees apply to the Score-O and Night-O at Buckeye Hills and to the Score-O at Robbins Butte. Click here to open a page with more information about our club fees. The fee schedule is also repeated at the bottom of this webpage.
