Introduction

On Saturday, April 9, 2022, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM, members of the Greater Phoenix Orienteering Club and Yavapai College will present a clinic teaching basic navigation concepts used in orienteering. The clinic is offered at Yavapai College in Clarkdale, AZ. (See here for directions). Participants will learn important techniques to navigate with a map and compass. While GPS receivers provide an easy way for people to navigate, conditions sometimes make the GPS units unreliable or unusable (navigating in deep canyons, dead batteries, etc.) Navigation techniques used in orienteering are an invaluable complement to navigating with a GPS receiver.

Additional information concerning our Beginner's Orienteering Training is found here.

Registration and Fees

NOTE: PRE-REGISTRATION is REQUIRED.

The fee for this training is $19 per participant. The course is part of the Yavapai College Community Education program. Fees are set by Yavapai College.

Schedule

9:00 AM

Clinic begins. Please be on time for the class. We'll do our best to make our way through as much of the course material as possible. (Click here for general course information.)

Please look for the orange and white orienteering sign at the south parking lot of Yavapai College. We'll gather near the sign then move to a site to conduct the orienteering training. Some of the training will involve practice outdoors to measure distance with a pace count and determine bearing using a compass.

11:00 AM Clinic ends. For those who want to practice what they've learned, we'll provide a map for a short course near Yavapai College. You're also welcome to join us on April 16 for a regular event starting again at Yavapai College.

What to bring:

Compass We prefer that participants bring their own compass. This will allow them to learn techniques during the training, then practice the techniques further at home. We will provide compasses to those who are not able to bring their own. See our classroom training summary here for additional details.
