Lake Pleasant Score-O

Event Writeup

We had yet another nice December day at Lake Pleasant. The turnout was great with a total of 42 people on the 3-hour Score-O. We had visitors from Oregon, Virginia, and even a Canadian snowbird who winters in Apache Junction. There were also some first timers and new memberships.

The controls were meant to be placed away from the firearm target practice areas. Unfortunately, some shooters occasionally setup just to the west of the start/finish line (after you turn onto the black top from Carefree highway). Control 24 was too close to this area. Unless we can get BLM to do something about it, in the future, we will mark that area as out of bounds on the map.

The course included a total of 25 controls worth 960 points. Four orienteers (Ron Birks, Nakai Lake, Mike Zampio, and Derrick Beracy) visited all the controls. Since Ron also had plenty of time to spare, we may need more controls next year. Setting more controls also means more time for the setter to prepare the course. The course setter Erik Ringnes used 5 1/2 hours to set. Ron used only 2:18 to clear the entire course.

Everybody on the course had a good time (as far as we can tell). The visitor from Oregon said the terrain was different than what she was used to. Our Virginia visitor may look us up again next time he is in town. We had some scouts out who competed against their dads. The old guys still had it and eked out a narrow victory. We had kids and beginners too. One complaint was about the map paper thickness. Perhaps a medium grade is best? Too light and the paper falls apart.

We hope you all liked this pre-Christmas event and plan to repeat next year.
