Papago Park has become one of our favorite event sites, especially for our beginner's clinics and for short sprint courses. The central location of the park makes it easily accessible to valley residents. The fixed course and buttes near the archery range provide an excellent spot for teaching basic orienteering and map-reading skills. There's also enough area in the south part of the park to put on a couple 2-3 km sprint events.
We're happy to have welcomed some seasoned orienteers as well as a few beginners. Kimball Forest joined us from the Arctic Orienteering Club (he spends winters in Sedona). We also had Peg Davis, Heather McClean, and Jeff Brucker up from the Tucson Orienteering Club.
The two sprints started at the ramada at the west parking lot (across from the zoo). While the courses were not overly difficult, completing the circuits required quick decisions to navigate through the many parallel re-entrants in the park. The top three finishers on the shorter course finished in under 20 minutes. The longer course took the finishers under 25 minutes to finish. The short courses also provided beginners Jill, Jennifer, and Colleen an opportunity to practice skills they learned in the beginner's clinic.
