The Phoenix Orienteering Club started its 2017/2018 orienteering season in the pine forest around Fort Tuthill County Park, just south of Flagstaff. Phoenix in September is not the best place to run in the heat of the day. On the other hand, located at nearly 7000 feet in elevation, Fort Tuthill is a great place to enjoy the summer temperatures. Saturday started with a beginner's clinic and continued with two sprint (short) courses near the Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course. A nice group of students from the Flagstaff area joined us for the beginner's clinic. After some tips on how to measure distance and bearing, the participants tried their new skills on one or both of the short courses. A total of 26 participants ran the short courses on Saturday. Sunday included three events: a 5-hour adventure race, a point-to-point Bike-O, and a 2-hour Score-O. Matt and Kevin did a great job placing controls throughout the park. Their job was much more difficult this year due to the crowds present in the park to participate an the annual bluegrass festival. Adventure race participants started with a 5 km foot navigation challenge followed by 20 km on mountain bike. They finished the race by finding as many of the Score-O controls as possible. Adventure race regulars Bob Badgett and Kristen Peer led the pack by visiting 28 total destinations. |
