Writeup

We had a great turnout for our Lone Mountain event. We improved our old map with new terrain features and more detailed contours. While we didn't get everything, we're happy to have a lot more detail on the map. Special thanks to Gary Hickey for the time he spent helping us field check.

Several points about the event:

  • In their first trip out of their houses in months, the "Boobs" put on a dazzling display and found the most controls on the Score-O. Way to go Mike and Hollon! Erik Ringnes was close behind, followed by an excellent showing from Gary Hickey.
  • In their first adventure race ever, team "PIP" easily traveled the most kilometers of the day. They successfully navigated their way nearly 10 kilometers off the map, then found their way back to the start/finish using the Bush Highway then Usery Pass Road. After all the effort, they still had the energy to return to the course to find a control. We hope to see them at a future event.
  • We threw in a couple extra points to increase the bike distance. Andy Wentzel still powered through and cleared all 30 controls on the adventure race. John Beard was close behind with 27 points. Tim Stefek and Harry Zulch followed with 22 points apiece.
  • In the adventure race, special recognition goes out to Marcy Beard. Not to be defeated by the course, she was the only one other than Andy to visit all 10 bike controls. She definitely gets the award for persistence.
  • We had another first for Betty DeThomasis who had never before navigated a course on her own. She went out and found 6 controls. She'll surely improve with more practice.
  • A big thanks to Telia Curtis, Justin St. Clair, and Patricia for helping with the course setup, to Telia for help with the registration and timing tables, and to Shane Lacanienta for his efforts to document GPHXO events on social media. Our volunteers are the reason our events are successful.
