Saturday February 21st started off as a chilly Arizona morning, but it quickly became a nice day for our Coon Bluff Classics event. The heat was mild, the sun was soft by Arizona standards, and the air was fresh. Pretty much perfect. We provided a 2-hour Score-O course for our JROTC participants conisting of 23 controls. Over 40 JROTC students ran the Score-O course. They came from three Phoenix area high scools: Sandra Day O'Connor (USAF), Deer Valley (USAF) and Apache Junction (USN). The students ran in 19 2- or 3-person teams. They did really well! We are impressed. Their leaders have taught them well and can be very proud of them. Sandra Day O'Connor HS JROTC Team 1 (William Sandy and Leonard Morgan) finished first by getting 19 of 23 controls and scoring 520 points. Sandra Day O'Connor HS JROTC Team 6 (Keaton Rodems, Lindsay Ellis and Mikayla Castro) finished second with 16 controls and 360 points. Deer Valley HS JROTC Team 10 (Aiden Booth and Nathan Hendricks) was third with 11 controls worth 350 points. Fourth overall, and the fastest women's team, was Deer Valley HS JROTC Team 1 (Madilyn Williams, Erin Anderson) with 16 controls worth 330 points. The remaining 15 JROTC teams all did great, finding lots of controls and amassing good point totals. We could not have held this event without volunteers. Dan Yamashiro worked the registration and timing tables with Gary. Ron Birks coordinated with JROTC leaders, updated the website, and compiled the scoring with Dan. Shane Lacanienta handled social media and made another of his great videos. Check it out on Facebook or Instagram. Loran Willis shot some nice drone video which Shane used. I never get tired of drone video, do you? Didn't think so! You can look Loran up on Instagram too. Marc Largie, Shane Lacanienta, John Beard and Marcy Beard picked up controls. And we can't forget the other club members who ensured we had insurance, permits, safety plans, etc. Finally, a big shout goes out to the JROTC leaders who spent their time organizing their outings.
