Score-O

Writeup

The Little Pan 2-hour Score-O challenged the best of orienteers. The winner had 680 of 730 possible points. However, two people did visit all controls, but came in late resulting in a good amount of penalty points. The terrain is not too dense with cactus or shrub, but makes up for that with some steep and challenging terrain. Every little re-entrant is clearly visible on the very detailed 5m contour-interval map. The map is a vast improvement over the map from 2019. Ron has used photo-stereography data to create these super cool maps.

Erik had designed a 6.34 km with 474m vertical best-path Score-O. The controls were placed so you pretty much had to be at the feature to spot them, with just a few exceptions. The furthest away 70-pointer, was not at a very difficult location - at a bend in the trail, but the spur it sat on was not the only spur. So our experienced competitors were still challenged.

We also had 11 teams from the Deer Valley ROTC compete. They were a joy to work with. Very well organized and polite no-nonsense kids. This promises well for the future of our country’s service members. A little more experience in maps and orienteering will make them even better equipped for the challenges they will face. We hope and expect they will come out to visit us again. The GPHXO club is proud to help out ROTC.

We also had some beginners come out, and it appeared all had a great time. Some times orienteering can seem difficult, especially if you don’t find anything the first time you try out. Thanks to Jeff, a beginner got some very helpful guidance. Keep it up all!

See you next time.
