Thumb Butte 2-/4-Hour Adventure Race, Score-O, Bike-O

The weather was nearly perfect for the Score-O, Bike-O and Adventure Race events near Prescott. Although things are drying out quickly, there was still some water flowing in the larger washes, and the soil wasn’t too dry for decent mountain biking. There were 28 orienteers out for the day, which was a lot bigger turnout than for the 2011 Bike-O event held in the same area.

The largest category was the 4-Hour Adventure Race format, which had 6 entries/10 racers. Ron Birks (790 points) and BFC Racing (820 points) had a tight race for the win, with BFC racing edging out Ron. In the 2-hour Foot-O category, Ludwig Hill managed to get all the controls on the 1:15k map, but was overtime by 9 seconds! Jeff Brucker won the 4-hour Foot-O category with 560 points.

One minor issue was that one of the controls was missing, and was found at the bottom of a rock outcropping with the punch missing (sabotage is suspected). Other than that, the event went smoothly.
