The Flagstaff Navigation Games 2021 #3 took place on September 11, 2021, at Fort Valley near Flagstaff, AZ. The Games included a Score-O, a Bike-O, and an Adventure Race. A strong field contested the Adventure Race. Andy Wentzel was the fastest to complete the course, winning by about 15 minutes over the team of Amber Tinstman and Mark Hawthorne. John and Marcy Beard cleared the course as well, James Brooks put in a strong showing. Tom Loomis and his daughter Ella made a good training day of the race. We had a small but dedicated turnout for the Score-O. Maybe it was the fear of storms. Maybe it was the concern Gary would misplace a control. Maybe it was deadfall fatigue (there's a lot of that up there). But no! We had perfect weather, the Score-O controls were correct, and only a few deadfall features were used for controls! Mac Schlaud finished first by getting 15 of 20 controls and scoring 690 of 900 points. Russ Pilcher finished second with a strong showing of 13 controls and 640 points. Hey Russ, please let us in on your secrets to maintaining youthfulness! Sophie Naughton was third overall and she was the fastest woman, with 12 controls worth 530 points. The other participants did well too, and some of them even collected some nice lobster mushrooms for dinner. The Bike-O was won by Harry Zulch, who was about 13 minutes faster than Brian and Irene Fabig. The Kings were a family group who did a fine job by visiting 7 of 10 controls. Thanks to all who volunteered their time. Ron provided new base maps. Yes, again! Now these maps are Lidar-based. Gary and Kevin did fieldwork so that the trails and rock features would be up-to-date. Thanks to Amber, Mark, John and Marcy for helping Kevin and Gary pick up controls.
