We opened another new event site at the parking area just east of the Robbins Butte Wildlife Area (southwest of Buckeye, AZ). While we've previously used terrain surrounding Robbins Butte, this was the first time we crossed over AZ-85 to the hilly terrain east of the highway. Fourteen participants joined us to navigate on our new map. The terrain includes a network of drainages in fairly flat terrain as well as three hills rising > 50 meters above the surrounding land. This area just off AZ-85 is an excellent addition to our navigation library.
John Beard was the only participant to clear the course in under the 2-hour time limit. Marcy Beard was close behind but finished just over the time limit. We're sure Marcy would have beat John if she felt better. Reid Axman and Jason Cram both visited 18 controls while Brian Durrell, Erik Ringnes, and Team Raffi each visited 15 or more controls. Team True North (Greg Krasa, Karen Jelenick), unconcerned with our silly time limits, leisurely visited all the controls in a little over 3 hours. We're glad we included enough terrain and destinations to keep all our participants entertained.
Thanks to everyone who joined us at our new event site. We really appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedules to participate in our little navigation course. And a special thanks to John and Marcy Beard, Jason Cram, Brian Durrell, Greg Krasa, and Karen Jelenick for helping with the control retrieval. We have an aggressive schedule of events for 2024. Your help makes it much easier for us to present orienteering events in the Phoenix area and beyond. We look forward to seeing you at upcoming events.
