We tried a new format for this year's events at Fort Tuthill. We decided to offer both a Score-O and a Night-O. We usually offer the Score-O in the morning and the Night-O in the evening. But with the long gap between the Score-O and the Night-O, many people are unable to do both events. In order to make the timing better for participants to maximize their navigation fun, we offered a 3-hour Score-O in the evening followed immediately by a 2-hour Night-O. Both events were a mass start with the Score-O starting at 5:00 PM and the Night-O at 8:00 PM.

The distance for the Score-O was short enough for the majority of the participants to complete the course. In addition to partipants we expect to clear the course, we also saw several participants find all the controls on a course for the first time. Jeff Rockow, Mike Zampino, Tim Stefek, and Tina and Wendy from WBTS were just some of the participants who cleared the course. Several participants fairly new to orienteering, including Raziel and Ruby Gonzalez and Lauren Mosley, had good days by visiting more than 10 of the destinations.

After a short break, we started the Night-O shortly after the end of civil twilight. There was still enough light to see at the start, but things turned dark quickly. The Night-O course had almost the same distance as the Score-O, which was long for a night course. Only Andy Wentzel was able to find all the controls. Jeff Rockow, Travis Gibbons, Streve Trautwein, Ed Marsh, and Alex Savine also had repectable outings on the course.

It's always nice to escape the Phoenix summer heat and head to the mountains around Flagstaff. We had another great outing at Fort Tuthill this year. We hope to see you all again soon.
