We had nice weather at our Fay Ridge Trailhead event on Saturday, July 13. It was great to get out of the Phoenix summer heat and enjoy some cool mountain temperatures. With open, runnable forest terrain and no real steep climbs, the Fay Canyon/Fay Ridge areas are fun places to practice our navigation skills.
Fourteen participants joined us for a 3-hour Score-O at the site just southeast of Flagstaff. Overall, participants enjoyed a lot of success finding the 23 controls placed on an 11 km/350 meter climb course. Three participants (Tim Stefek, Dan Yamashiro, and Glenn Haselfeld) cleared the course, with Tim clocking the fastest time at just over 2:20. Three more participants or teams found 19 or 20 controls, with Team True North and Bob Badgett finding 20 controls and Alex Savine finding 19. Tina and Wendy of Team WBTS, coming off an impressive course-clearing adventure at Fort Tuthill in June, were slowed down a bit by an injury on the course. Russ Pilcher brought a first-time orienteer Andre to experience a little navigation fun. Regular participant Jeff Rockow started slowly but had a strong finish towards the end of his run. Special mention goes to first-time orienteers Kitt and Christian from Whiskey Basin Wannabees as they found nearly half the controls in just over two hours. Their first-time experience should help them well as they prepare for the Barkley Marathons later this year.
Thanks to all of you who joined us for our Fay Ridge Trailhead event. We really appreciate you spending the time to navigate through our course. As a non-profit organization, our only real payoff is seeing all of you enjoy the navigation challenges at our events. And a special thanks to Dan, Greg, and Karen for helping us with control collection after the event. We're often quite tired after visiting the control locations several times in preparation for the event. We really appreciate your help afterwards.
We look forward to seeing you all again at one of our upcoming events.
