Writeup

We had perfect fall weather for our Needle Rock event this year. Not too hot (~70F max), not too cold (~47F at the start). We started early to give our 6-hour participants enough time to complete the course and drive home in the afternoon. Sixteen participants joined us for the day. With terrain criss-crossed by OHV roads and trails, we allowed participants to travel by bike or on foot. Except for one group that used their bicycles for one hour of the 6-hour event, everyone traveled by foot.

The six-hour course might have been a little short for elite runners, but was just about right for our more experienced navigators. Jason Poole was the only one who visited all the destinations on the course. He has cactus battle wounds to show for it. Team Kayak Lake Mediocre nearly cleared the entire course and was the only group that traveled by bike. With the random placement of controls, traveling by bike didn't offer any real advantage. First time orienteers Madelyn and Courtney had an impressive day, visiting 9 controls in under 4 hours. First time navigators Laura and Matthew also visited 6 controls in under 3 hours. We're glad we had a nice turnout to navigate on our expanded Needle Rock map.

Special thanks to Marcy, John, Robert, Druce, Jonathan, and Gary for helping to retrieve controls after the event. Putting on long navigation events is especially challenging because of the time it takes to hang the bags. With the help of everyone retrieving bags after the event, we were all able to head home before 4:00 PM. Thanks a bunch for all your help.
