We had a small, enthusiastic group join us for our late-season event starting at the Wild Horse Trailhead, along the Salt River, north of Mesa, AZ. Temperatures in late May in Phoenix start to rise into the 100's, but early mornings still have wonderful temperatures. Kyle Seifullin was there to meet us at 5:00 AM and was done with the course slightly after 7:00. Everyone else was off the course by 9:30 AM. Marcy Beard led the way by visiting all 18 controls in under 2 hours. John Beard was next with 15, followed by Reid Axman with 14. There were several rattlesnake sightings on the course, with Keith Randle narrowly avoiding stepping on one. Matt and Laura Veglak were able to translate new skills learned in a city park to navigating in the open desert. We created the map just a few days before the event, but it was good enough to present a number of navigation challenges to participants. We're happy to have another event site in the Phoenix area.
Special thanks go out to Reid Axman, Marcy Beard, and John Beard, for collecting controls after the event. They were able to collect all the controls before we left. We really appreciate the help from participants afterwards. It makes it a lot easier to organize events. Thanks everyone for all your help. And good luck to Anna Hoge as she transitions from many years of Med School to a residency in Washington State.
