Writeup

We had a light turnout for our Fay Canyon Road Score-O near Flagstaff. Five participants joined us at one of our better event sites in the Flagstaff area. The terrain contains rolling hills with many rock features. The area is broken by numerous drainages, including one large drainage in the middle of the map. The weather was almost perfect for a summer morning in Flagstaff. Temperatures were in the high 60's to low 70's at the start, climbing to 80 by the time everyone finished. Winds in the area kept the smoke plume from the Pocket Fire to the west, so we didn't suffer the terrible air quality experienced by other areas around Flagstaff.

Erik Ringnes visited all but two of the destinations in just over 2 hours. His busy schedule kept him from diverting to check off the final two controls. Russ Pilcher had a good showing by visiting 11 controls. He made the drive from Prescott to join us for a morning of orienteering fun. Gary Hickey came out to help with control retrieval and decided to put in an hour in on the course. He cleared half the course in just over an hour, then helped collect controls after. TJ Kuhn broke with his normally efficient navigating to at least make it back in a decent time. He may have been turned around a couple times on the course, but his skills at least allowed him to enjoy the nice Flagstaff weather and join us back at the start/finish. Finally, Jason Brown found 5 controls as he spent several hours for his first time ever navigating with a topo map. Before preparing for the event, he had no experience with topographic maps. Kudos for using the map to find 5 destination markers AND finding your way back to the start/finish.

The summer weather in Flagstaff is much better than Phoenix summer weather. We'll continue to present events in the mountains to escape the summer heat. We hope future events will attract more participants for fun navigating in the cool forest surrounding Flagstaff.
