Dead Horse Ranch State Park

Introduction

Events

  • 2-hour Score-O
  • 4-hour Score-O

We're excited to offer another day of navigation fun at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, AZ. On Saturday, October 17, we'll present a Score-O with two options. For those looking for a limited amount of navigation, we're offering our usual 2-hour Score-O. Those looking for a more adventurous day can stay out for 4-hours. Both events use the same map.

Dead Horse Ranch State Park is located along the banks of the Verde River on the north side of Cottonwood, AZ. With abundant water and scenic mountain landscapes nearby, the park is filled with a variety of birds and mammals. Three lagoons inside the park offer visitors an opportunity for fishing. The orienteering terrain is rugged with rocky scrub forest, washes and ravines, cliffs, and other topographic challenges. We hope you'll take some time from your busy schedules to join us to explore this new area.

COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS

To make this event as safe as reasonably possible in the current COVID-19 environment, we are taking the following measures:

  • One of the conditions for our Dead Horse Ranch State Park permit is that we space participant start times over a longer period of the morning. In order to help manage our start times, we ask that you pre-register for the event. During pre-registration, you will select a specific half-hour time window to start your event. Please plan to start the event in half-hour window you select.
  • All individuals (or family units) will maintain a six-foot separation at all times.
  • Team sizes are limited to 6 people or less.
  • The registration/pay station is largely self-serve. Please bring exact change to minimize the exchange of money.
  • We'll have a Timer on-hand to issue maps and record timing.
  • A hand-washing station is provided on a table adjacent to the registration table. Please wash hands before and after registering/signing waivers/paying/picking up score cards and clue sheets. Please also bring your own hand towel for that purpose.
  • No water is available on the courses. We also will NOT provide our usual complementary snacks and drinks at the Start/Finish area. Bring your own snacks and water for a full day of orienteering.
  • There is no beginners’ clinic.

Entrance Fee for Dead Horse Ranch State Park

There is a $7 per vehicle entrance fee to enter Dead Horse Ranch State Park. The entrance fee is not included in the event registration fee. Each vehicle entering the park must pay the entrance fee. You can save money by car-pooling.

There is overflow parking (6 spots) at the Flycatcher horse parking, a 400 meter hike from the start/finish.
