  • Short Classic (Total 4.9km/222m/10 controls)
  • Long Classic (Total 7.5km/327m/15 controls)

On Saturday, February 25, we're offering four events at our Sophie's Flat event site: a 1.5-hour Score-O, a 3-hour Score-O, a short Classic course, and a long Classic course. Those who participate in one of the Score-O courses will travel on foot to find as many destination markers as they can in either 1.5 or 3.0 hours. Participants in the Classic courses travel from point to point in a specified order.

Morning temperatures in February are typically in the mid 40's. The temperature can climb into the low 70's by midday. The desert around Sophie's Flat contains a medium amount of prickly vegetation; not as much as we find at our First Water events but more than what is found at Buckeye Hills. The terrain is fairly rugged, with deep washes cutting through the area and rocky terrain slowing your progress. The map has been recently updated to include new contours and vegetation. The new map allows more precise navigation than older maps of the area.


Pre-Registration and Fees

The Sophie's Flat and Little Pan events are part of the larger Southwest Spring Week in Tucson and Phoenix. However, due to permitting restrictions in the Phoenix area, pre-registration for the Sophie's Flat and Little Pan events is handled through this pre-registration link.

Note 1: Pre-registration is required for the Sophie's Flat and Little Pan events. You must pre-register for the Phoenix events using the above link.

Note 2: Due to permitting restrictions, we are not allowed to charge a registration fee for the Sophie's Flat and Little Pan events. However, we still have costs associated with presenting the events, including printing costs, insurance, etc. The registration pages in the link above include options to donate. Please consider donating to the club to help cover the costs associated with participation in the events.


Parental Consent:

All participants under age 18 are now required to have a signed parental consent form on file with the club. You can complete the form before the event and either scan it and send it to us by e-mail or bring it with you to the event.


What to Bring:

Whistle Mandatory for all.
Compass Please bring your own compass. We may have some extras laying around, but our extras may have annoying bubbles in the compass fluid.
Water bottles. We will not provide water on the course. We strongly encourage you to bring your own water bottles or a camelback.
Sunscreen There is little to no shade on the course.
Sturdy hiking shoes and long pants Recommended. You may encounter cactus, cat claw, and loose terrain.
