We had a nice turnout with 34 participants joining us at our Sophie's Flat Score-O. With spring temperatures and no wind, the weather was great for a little navigation fun. We're happy that JROTC groups from two area high schools (Deer Valley, Sandra Day O'Connor) also joined us. Thanks to everyone who drove the extra distance to the Wickenburg area to enjoy a morning navigating in the desert.

The distance for the event was just about right. Marcy Beard led all participants by clearing the course in just under three hours. Brian Durrell found all but one of the controls. Todd Wakefield, John Beard, and Kevin Adams all had strong showings.

In our 90-minute event, no one finished the event in under 90 minutes. Some of the high school teams were involved finding one of their lost colleagues. Because of the high number of overtime results, we decided to place everyone in the three-hour category. I hope this decision is acceptable. We must note that several teams tried very hard to come back on time. Team DV3 (Jakob Taylor, Jacob Enlow) was only over time by 30 seconds and team DV3 (Elizabeth Rosman, Jillian Enlow, Corey Ratley) came in under 2 minutes late. We have to give them credit for their effort.

We created a new Sophie's Flat map for this year's event. While the old map used generalized USGS contours and included some vegetation symbols, this year's map included contours generated from a point cloud created using stereophotogrammetry on 1-m resolution satellite images. Thicker vegetation was also included using photosynthesis reflections from satellite images. The technologies made navigating more fun with the more detailed maps.
