On Sunday, January 19, 2020 from 9:00 to 10:30 AM, members of the Greater Phoenix Orienteering Club will present a FREE class teaching basic navigation concepts used in orienteering. The class is offered from the parking area of the ranger station near Hole-in-Rock (north of the Phoenix Zoo - see directions). Participants in the class will learn some of the important techniques involved in navigating with topographic maps and a compass. While GPS receivers provide an incredibly easy way for people to navigate, conditions sometimes make the GPS units unreliable or unusable (navigating in deep canyons, dead batteries, etc.) Navigation techniques used in orienteering are invaluable for times when GPS receivers are unusable.

Additional information concerning our Beginner's Orienteering Training is found here.

NOTE: PRE-REGISTRATION is REQUESTED. ( [image:O flag] Pre-register )
We ask that you pre-register for this event. It is much easier to plan the number of copies of our training materials we need when we know how many people will attend the training. While we'll try to accommodate those who do not pre-register, we cannot guarantee that we will have enough training materials for those who do not pre-register.

9:00 AM Class begins. Please be on time for the class. We'll do our best to make our way through as much of the course material as possible. (Click here for general course information.)
10:30 PM Class ends. For those who want to practice what they've learned, we'll provide an orienteering map for the park across the street from the library.

What to bring:

Compass We prefer that participants bring their own compass. This will allow them to learn techniques during the training, then practice the techniques further at home. We will provide compasses to those who are not able to bring their own.
